The Utah Highway Patrol has released the name of the man who died Thursday in a head-on crash while driving on U.S. 40 a few miles south of Heber City last week.

Juan Gambino, 36, of Riverton, was driving west in a Ford F-150 into oncoming traffic to pass another vehicle when the accident occurred. Highway Patrol Sgt. Cameron Roden said Gambino stayed in oncoming the lane after passing a slower vehicle for an unknown reason.

It was in that lane where Gambino struck a Dodge Ram truck pulling a flatbed trailer at about 10:30 p.m. The collision was head-on, and Gambino was the only fatality.

While Roden said he believes there are passing areas and zones within the vicinity of the deadly crash, he wasn’t sure whether Gambino was using one of the legal passing methods or passing in an undesignated spot.

The 45-year-old man driving the Dodge Ram and the 39-year-old female passenger both left the scene via ambulance. Roden said their injuries were not life-threatening. He said the pair are from Tabiona.

“Having that be a head-on collision, that’s pretty serious injuries,” Roden said.
